About Us

“SAWUURA” stands for “Sierra Ancha Wilderness Unitarian Universalist Association”. The purpose of SAWUURA is to provide a religious, educational, and spiritual center for members and friends of Unitarian Universalist congregations.

The SAWUURA property was acquired in the late 1970’s by a determined group of members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix who happened to find a prime piece of private property for sale inside the Tonto National Forest. SAWUURA, a non-profit corporation, is governed by a board of nine trustees, elected by the membership. Membership is open to those who are members of a Unitarian Universalist congregation, and organizations affiliated with such congregations, and who subscribe to and support the purposes, goals, and philosophy of SAWUURA.

The SAWUURA property may be used by SAWUURA members and their guests and registrants for SAWUURA sponsored events. Additionally, members may camp on the property by notifying a board member prior to their trip and completing and emailing a signed liability waiver to the SAWUURA secretary at info@sawuura.org .

Each stay is limited to a maximum of 14 days per individual. Be sure to turn in a LIABILITY FORM.

Non-members may use the facility only if accompanied by a member.
