The Two Big Fall Events are coming - Labor Day, and Women's Weekend:
Labor Day!
September 1-4 2006 will be the best SAWUURA Labor Day event ever! Deep in the heart of the Tonto National Forest, gather with campers from around Arizona in the warm UU welcoming tradition! Our theme for the weekend is "Gifts of the Trees". Registration includes food for the entire weekend. An additional $5 donation is requested for materials, for those who wish to participate in the program of building a middle eastern style chair from local, downed wood. Individuals and/or families may choose to build one and may take it home or keep it at SAWUURA. Whether or not you make a chair, EVERYONE is invited for delicious meals, fellowship, conversation, hiking, crafts, the purifying steam of the sweat lodge, singing, worshiping, laughing, roasting marshmallows, and of course stargazing. We have a campsite (or a cabin) with your name on it! We also have a few tents available for those who do not have one. Visit www.sawuura.org for more information and forms. Email registration@sawuura.org or call Eb at 520-622 6966 or Scott at 480-829-0858, with your questions.
Women's Weekend
Women, experience the tranquility of SAWUURA, our 100-Acre Wood in the Sierra Ancha Mountains of Arizona, as we reflect on transitions in our lives and our world. Give yourself the time to relax, laugh, hike and share stories with other women in this place of transition just below the Mogollon Rim. Women of all ages are welcome including those who have finished their Coming of Age program. Registration is required. $40 for SAWUURA members/$50 for non-members. Saturday and Sunday meals are included. For more information, visit www.sawuura.org, or contact Karen Stucke at kstucke@earthlink.net / 480-829-8059.
Improvements at SAWUURA!
Last weekend the new water line was finished and pressure tested! The fence (which goes completely around the property) had been damaged in one area, but is now repaired and better than before. As we've mentioned in the previous newsletter, the road from Globe has been paved now all the way to the Pine trees, significantly reducing the time it takes to get to the property. The summer cabins have gotten some sprucing up, and the sweat lodge is being completely rebuilt and will be ready for the Labor Day event. So SAWUURA continues to get better! Thanks to all who have pitched in! We encourage everyone to come out and work on projects at SAWUURA. Youth groups especially should consider SAWUURA a really fun place to do community/service work projects! There is always more we can do to make it better! For more information, email info@sawuura.org.
Youth Camp 2007!
It may seem early, but organizers are now already discussing a youth camp in summer 2007. If you are interested in learning more - or participating - or helping out - please email info@sawuura.org!
What we are...
"SAWUURA" is the Sierra Ancha Wilderness UU Religious Association. This is a primitive retreat with running water from our own well and windmill, but with no electricity or phone. The 109 acre property forms roughly a rectangle in the small valley of "Seven Mile Creek", about 5 miles south and west of Pleasant Valley. It is mostly covered with pine and juniper. There are a number of designated camping areas along an unpaved road running through the center of the land, and several hiking trails of varying levels of difficulty. On the edge of a flat meadow near the middle is a complete outdoor kitchen, which can be used to feed more than 70 people. 3 large framed tarps in and around the kitchen area provide protection from rain and/or afternoon sun. Nearby are the main campfire circle and sweat lodge. There are 4 fiberglass privies and 2 private, solar hot water showers on the property.
When you come, please provide your own tent, or reserve one of the 2 screened cabins. Bring camping gear, hiking shoes, musical instruments, etc. Fall is usually dry and cool, but not cold. Temperatures are anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Visit www.sawuura.org for more information and event registration forms.
Thanks for your support of SAWUURA - hope to see you out there!!!
